Notes

Horseback riding is a wonderful recreational, as well as therapeutic, activity for anyone with one or more disabilities.

We also offer a wonderful opportunity for anyone age 14 or older to volunteer. If you're comfortable around horses, enjoy being outdoors in all kinds of weather and have a sincere interest in helping to make this special activity available to people of all ages who happen to have one or more disabilities

Individual and group lessons are available to people with disabilities: e.g., cerebral palsy, autism, paraplegia, brain damage, intellectual disabiliteis and blindness.

Lessons are offered weekly year-round, weather permitting, and are held in an outdoor riding ring. Lessons average about 20 minutes each, but actual time will vary depending on the student. They are available on Saturdays between 9:30 AM and 12:00 PM and on Sundays between 1:00-2:30 PM. During the summer, lessons may be scheduled on a weekday evening when volunteers are available to assist.

Lessons are planned by the ATRC Riding Instructor to meet physical and/or behavioral goals established for each riding student. The riding plan developed to achieve these goals is reviewed periodically to assess progress and to make any changes necessary.

The Albany Therapeutic Riding Center, Inc. (ATRC) is located in Voorheesville, NY (12 miles southwest of Albany).

Our program is certified as a Member Center by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, Inc. (NARHA). The Riding Instructor holds current Advanced Certification for Cognitive and Physical Disabilities from NARHA, as well as current American Red Cross First Aid Certification.
